Why We Do What We Do

While it is home to an extremely resilient and diverse population with a strong sense of community, Broadmeadows and the surrounding areas currently face significant disadvantage.

The 2007 study undertaken by the Jesuit Social Service, Dropping off the Edge (2007), showed that Campbellfield (3061) fell into the top 10 most disadvantaged postcodes in Victoria, with Broadmeadows, Dallas and Jacana (3047) falling into the next most disadvantaged set of postcodes.

The following charts produced with data from the latest Census show the significant disparity in level and distribution of income between Broadmeadows, the Melbourne Statistical Division and the Victorian average. Even more importantly, the second chart provides a snapshot of the huge education gap which, if not addressed, will perpetuate this structural disadvantage.

Recent efforts by government and community organisations have resulted in encouraging signs of improvement for early years (preschool and early primary years). However currently there are very few support initiatives aimed at older students (late primary and secondary).
